At Odessa Family Dental, we know trying dental sedation for the first time can be a little scary. You’re in good hands—our specialists have offered gentle sedation dentistry!
Your experience depends on which sedative and pain medicine we use. Even with sedation, we’ll numb the area completely with a local anesthetic.
Here are your sedation options:
- Nitrous Oxide (“Laughing Gas”)
- One of the gentlest, fastest-acting sedatives.
- You breathe a mix of nitrous gas and oxygen through a soft nosepiece.
- You’ll feel relaxed (maybe a little tingly) within minutes, stay aware, and feel less nervous.
- After your treatment, we switch to 100% oxygen for about five minutes to clear the gas.
Oral Sedation
- For a deeper level of comfort.
- You’ll take a pill about one hour before your treatment starts.
- By the time we start, you’ll feel dreamy or like you’re taking a light nap, and most people barely remember the visit.
IV Conscious Sedation
- Best for complex surgeries or strong dental anxiety.
- The medicine is given through a small IV, so it goes straight into your blood.
- It acts quickly and is closely monitored, giving you the deepest, most peaceful sedation.
After Your Sedation
- Except with nitrous oxide, you’ll feel groggy for a while—so plan to have someone drive you home.
- You may feel a bit nauseous at first and your mouth will stay numb for a few hours until the local anesthetic wears off.
