At Odessa Family Dental, we understand how missing teeth can affect your confidence and comfort. Whether you lost a tooth in an accident or to decay, knowing why it happened and what you can do about it will help you decide what’s best for your smile.
Why Teeth Go Missing
- Tooth Decay (Cavities): If a cavity is not treated, it can destroy enough tooth structure that the tooth must be removed.
- Gum Disease: Long-term gum infections can eat away at the bone and tissue that hold your teeth in place, eventually causing teeth to fall out.
- Injury or Accident: If you fall or get hit hard in the mouth, it can break a tooth or even knock it out completely.
- Natural Aging: As we get older, our teeth and gums can weaken, making tooth loss more likely.
- Genetics: Some people are born missing one or more teeth (conditions called hypodontia or oligodontia).
- Smoking & Health Conditions: Smoking, diabetes, and osteoporosis can all increase the chance of losing teeth.
Your Options for Replacing Teeth
Dental Implants
- A small metal post made of titanium is put into your jawbone.
- After it heals, we attach a crown on top that looks and works like a real tooth.
- Implants are very strong and can last many years.
Fixed Bridge (Fixed Partial Denture)
- A bridge uses the teeth on either side of a gap for support.
- It’s cemented in place and can replace one or more missing teeth.
Removable Partial Denture (RPD)
- This is a tooth-colored appliance you can take in and out.
- It has small clips that attach to the nearby teeth to help keep it in place.
- RPDs are usually made from plastic, metal, or a combination of both materials.
How Missing Teeth Affect You
- Chewing & Speaking: Gaps can make it harder to eat certain foods and pronounce some words.
- Shifting Teeth & Bone Loss: Remaining teeth can tilt into the empty space, and your jawbone may shrink over time.
- Self-Confidence: Smiling and talking can feel less comfortable when teeth are missing.
At Odessa Family Dental, we’ll help you choose the right solution—whether it’s an implant, bridge, or denture—so you can eat, speak, and smile with confidence again.
