CBCT and Digital Planning for Full-Arch Dental Implants

A CBCT scan gives Dr. Jeff a three-dimensional view of the jaw. It is helpful, but it is only one part of the plan. The final plan must also consider the teeth you want, your bite, your smile, your health, and how the restoration will be cleaned and maintained.

What is a CBCT scan?

CBCT stands for cone beam computed tomography. It is a dental X-ray that creates a three-dimensional picture of the area being studied. A regular dental X-ray is flat. A CBCT lets the dentist look at the jaw from different angles.

For full-arch implant planning, it may help show the shape and amount of bone, the direction of the jaw, and the location of structures that matter during surgery. That information helps Dr. Jeff understand what may be possible and what needs more discussion.

A scan cannot promise healing, choose the best treatment by itself, or show exactly how the final smile will look. It supports the clinical decision; it does not replace it.

Start with the planned teeth—not just the bone

Full-arch implants are placed to support a restoration. That means planning should begin with the end in mind: where the teeth should be, how they should look, how the bite should work, and how the patient will clean and maintain them.

Dr. Jeff is both the surgeon and restorative dentist for full-arch cases completed at Odessa Family Dental. He can plan the restoration and the surgery together instead of treating them as separate projects. This is often called restoratively driven or prosthetic-first care.

The number and position of implants still depend on the individual patient. Anatomy, bone distribution, restorative space, force management, health, and clinician judgment all affect the plan.

What else goes into the plan?

Your examination and health history

These help identify medical, dental, tissue, healing, hygiene, and comfort factors that may affect treatment.

Smile and facial photographs

Photos help communicate tooth shape, smile goals, lip position, and facial support that a bone scan cannot show.

Scans, impressions, and bite records

These record the shape of the mouth and how the jaws meet. The right method depends on the situation.

The planned restoration

The intended teeth guide discussions about implant position, restorative space, bite, cleaning access, and serviceability.

Odessa Family Dental coordinates the design and fabrication process with the laboratory. Patients may bring photos of smiles they like before the first design, and requested changes should be discussed during the provisional stage before the final restoration is made.

What about a surgical guide?

A surgical guide is a tool that may help transfer a planned implant position to the mouth. It can support preparation and consistency, but it does not make surgery automatic or guarantee an exact result.

Dr. Jeff still has to confirm that the guide fits, compare it with the patient’s anatomy, and respond to what he finds during treatment. A good plan includes a safe way to adjust when the mouth, the guide, or the treatment-day findings do not match what was expected.

CBCT and full-arch planning FAQs

What does a CBCT scan show?

It creates a three-dimensional view of the area being studied. For implant planning, it may help the dentist evaluate the jawbone and nearby anatomy from several angles.

Does every full-arch patient need the same scan?

No. The records needed depend on the patient, the clinical question, and the proposed treatment. Dr. Jeff will explain which imaging or other records are appropriate for your case.

Does the CBCT decide where the implants go?

No. It supplies useful information about the jaw, but implant planning must also consider the intended teeth, bite, restorative space, health, hygiene, and what the examination shows.

Is a digital mouth scan the same as a CBCT?

No. A mouth scan records the visible surface shape of teeth and tissues. A CBCT shows three-dimensional information inside the jaw. They answer different questions and may be used together.

Does a surgical guide make implant surgery exact?

No. A guide may help transfer a plan, but the dentist must verify its fit and respond to the patient’s anatomy and treatment-day findings. A guide supports judgment; it does not replace it.
